Chalmer Jackson “Jack” Daines, 86, passed away Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014, at Heritage Manor in Elroy.

He was born to Hazael and Beatrice (Erwin) Daines on Oct. 26, 1927, in La Farge. Jack always said that his father wanted a tractor when he was born, and if he had been a girl his name would have been Alice, after Allis Chalmer Tractors.

Jack grew up in Valley, where he attended grade school. He went on to high school in Hillsboro, and during high school, in 1944, he lied about his age to join the Navy, for which his brother, Germaine, was serving on a battleship in the Pacific.

After the Navy, Jack lived in Milwaukee, where he met the love of his life, Joan Castona, at a community dance. Joan and a friend bought their tickets for the dance from Jack, and as the girls walked away, Joan told her friend that she was going to marry that man. Jack and Joan were married Sept. 4, 1948, in Valley.

Jack was a “jack of all trades” and could do almost anything well. He worked for the Kickapoo Oil Company during the company’s early days. However, the majority of his career was spent on a bridge crew, for which he worked as a crane operator for Edward Kramer & Sons. This opportunity allowed him and Joan to travel all around the United States and make many wonderful friends along the way. Jack never met a stream he didn’t love to fish or a golf course he didn’t love to play. He made friends easily and was often the life of the party wherever he went.

After retirement, Jack and Joan spent their winters in sunny Arizona and returned to Valley in the summer months. Jack cared for Joan for seven years, as Alzheimer’s slowly took over her life. He only stopped caring for her when he was called to heaven.

Jack is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joan; three children, Jan Litton, Jeff and Jenifer (James) Hunter; four grandchildren, Jackie Pitkin, J. Phillip, Jelora (Tony) Coman, and Jesse (Lisa) Hunter; and three great-grandchildren, Jecole Coman, Joel Coman and Juliette Hunter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazael and Beatrice Daines; his brothers, Dallas and Germaine; a sister-in-law, Bernadine; and his grandchildren, Joshua and Roxanne Daines Steele.

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service for Jack at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the Picha Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Pastor Bruce Milleman will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until the time of service. The Picha Funeral Home is serving the family.

Mary “Jane” (nee Coldren) Clark, 84, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, in Beloit, Wis. She passed on the birthday of her much-loved father, Ashley Vernon Coldren, who would have been 116 years of age at this point in time.

Jane was born in Norwalk to Ashley and Julia (Berendes) Coldren on April 23, 1930. The first of 11 children, Jane, at the age of 21, became mother as well as beloved sister to her siblings upon the untimely death of their mother at the age of 43. Their love and affection for one another was a source of great joy and deep friendship.

She went to high school in Kendall and graduated in 1949. Jane enjoyed the many reunions she returned to over the years and cherished these early friendships.

On July 14, 1953, Jane was united in marriage to James R. “Bill” Brown, “the love of her life”; to them, three daughters were born. Jane and Bill created a happy home where they lovingly raised their family at the house on McKinley, where she went on to live for 50 years. Their home was known to many, and folks who stopped by could rely on an ever-ready homemade meal or a piece of pie before a walk among the many flowerbeds and a stroll out to the garden.

She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Jude Catholic Church, where she acted as a Eucharistic Minister, distributing communion to the parish’s sick and homebound, and was a member of the Marian Guild C.C.W. She was involved with the Women’s Auxiliary of VFW Mead-Allen Post 2306 and a member of the Beloit Eagles Club.

Her holiday cookie deliveries were gleefully anticipated by many lucky recipients, including her church’s homebound parishioners. She taught most of us how to play cards and cribbage – well. She loved the Packers and would cite statistics with the best of them. She may enjoy a drink on game day, but never more than her prescriptive “half a glass.” She was the keeper of important family dates, always remembering to send a card on a special day. She was prayerful and grateful and cheerful every day of her life. Her family cannot remember a time when she said an unkind word about anyone.

Jane had a servant’s heart, which was reflected in the abundant love she had for her family and friends. Her greatest joy and fulfillment was found during time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jane is survived by her daughters Rebecca (Cal) Bennington of Livermore, Calif., and, Shelley (Chris Birkey) Cousin of Beloit; a son-in-law Gary (Aleda Lucas) Zimmerman of Beloit; two former sons-in-law, Ron Zimmerman of Beloit and Robert (Rhonda) Cousin of Milton, Wis.; her grandchildren Melissa (Joel) Sampson of Janesville, Chris (Courtney Campbell-) Zimmerman of Beloit, Miranda (Chris) Kindschi of Beloit, Levi (Erika Rogers) Cousin of Beloit, Jane (Ryan) Roberts of Beloit, Anna Cousin of Beloit, Kaylee Zimmerman of Stowe, VT, Ben Huff of Beloit, and Alex Huff of Beloit; her great-grandchildren, Cruz, Jada, Journey, Desmyn, Lilliana, Skye, Ryan, Trey, Takoda, Ryder and Dean; her sisters, Kate (Thomas “Bud”) Finucan of Janesville, Eva (Larry) McCracken of Poynette, Wis., Joyce Tessmer of Janesville, Alice (Jim) Model of Stoughton, Wis., and, Irene “Sally” Haffner of Lancaster, Penn.; a brother, Bill “Josh” (Judy) Coldren of Pinellas Park, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Patrick Kennedy of McFarland, Wis.; two sisters-in-law, Annette Coldren of Sturtevant, Wis., Deb Coldren of Wilton; her much-loved nieces and nephews; her dear first cousin, Dorothy Warriner of Beloit; her lifelong friends, Matt and Marion Steidl of Tomah; and her good friend and favorite dance partner, Bernie Novy of Beloit.

In addition to her parents, Jane was preceded in her death by her beloved husband of 35 years, Jim “Bill” Brown; her oldest daughter, Deb (Gary) Zimmerman; her mother-in-law, Lillian Mae Walker Brown of Lenoir City, Tenn., who became “like a mother” to her; her sisters, Bette Coldren of Madison and Emmy (Patrick) Kennedy of McFarland, Wis.; her brothers, Duane “Butch” (Deb) Coldren of Wilton and Fred (Annette) Coldren of Pinellas Park, Fla.; her sisters-in-law, Edna (Duane “Butch”) Coldren of Wilton, Mildred (Reeford) McConkey of Lenoir City, Tenn., Margaret “Margie” (Brown) Reed of Waynesville, N.C., Nona (Herbert Brown) Thiede of Beloit, Joyce (Bud) Brown of Lenoir City, Tenn., and Francis “Fran” (Torfin “Rusty”) Clark-Rustad of Beloit; her brothers-in-law, Reeford (Mildred) McConkey of Lenoir City, Tenn., James “Jimmy” (Margie) Reed of Waynesville, N.C., Herbert Brown of Lenoir City, Tenn., George “Bud” (Joyce) Brown of Lenoir City, Tenn., Gary (Sally) Haffner of Lancaster, Penn., and Elmer (Joyce) Tessmer of Janesville; her niece, Sacia Joy Haffner; a lifelong friend, Rose Marx of Clinton; her much-loved “auntie,” Agnes Flock of Tomah; her husband of one year, Leonard Rochester; and her husband of 13 years, Fay Clark.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 1, at St. Jude Catholic Parish in Beloit, beginning with a visitation at 10 a.m. and followed by the celebration of a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., with Fr. John Hedrick and Fr. Bill O’Connell officiating. Burial will follow at Floral Lawn Cemetery in South Beloit, Ill. Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home and Crematorium, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, assisted the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Beloit Regional Hospice (www.beloitregionalhospice.com) and/or the Alzheimer’s Association of South Central Wisconsin (www.alz.org/scwisc/donate).

Condolences may be left in Jane’s online guestbook at www.daleymurphywisch.com.

We will always remember the sensitive in-home care provided to Jane by the loving hands of Sally Carson and Freda Goeff – thank you. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Sun Valley Terrace for the care and love shown to Jane. And, it’s impossible to adequately thank the staff of Beloit Regional Hospice for their steadfast compassionate care. You are such special people, and we are so very grateful for the grace with which you held vigil with us.

Patricia Louise DeWitt Herrlein, 82, died peacefully at Silverado, an Alzheimer’s nursing home in Kingwood, Texas, on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014. Her daughter Sara was at her side, along with loving caregivers.

Pat was born June 29, 1932, to James and Hazel DeWitt at the family farm home near Ontario. She attended Johnnycake Grade School, Ontario High School, Minnesota Bible College and the University of Minnesota.

The day after graduating from the university, she married Frank Herrlein of Mitchell, S.D., who was in the service at that time. Pat taught school at Farmington, Minn., and later worked as a librarian in a variety of areas ranging from high schools to colleges to medical libraries during her career. In later years, she worked as a substitute teacher in York, Penn.

While in the service, their son, Frank (Gino), was born in Morocco. After Frank left the service, they returned to the States and lived in Cocoa Beach, Fla., where their daughter, Sara, was born. Frank’s career took the family to many parts of the world, such as Iran, Ireland and Saudi Arabia. In each country, Pat made their house into a home for the family during the years they were there. When the Shah of Iran fell, she packed by candlelight to flee the country with the children, arriving just in time for Christmas in Janesville. Pat and Frank enjoyed spending time with family and friends, vacationing in Ireland, Scotland, England, Spain and Mexico. Ever the traveler, Pat traveled in Russia and Israel while Frank went on an African safari. During the times when they were in the States, they lived in York, Penn.

After retirement, they moved to Houston, Texas, to be closer to their family. In addition to traveling, Pat loved reading, cooking, the theater and caring for her granddaughter.

Pat is survived by her daughter, Sara Herrlein of Dallas, Texas; her granddaughter, Brittany Herrlein of Los Angeles; a sister, Monica (Wayne) Woodard of Janesville; her brothers, John (Inge) DeWitt of Orting, Wash., Michael DeWitt of Tomah, and James (Nancy) DeWitt of Englewood, Fla.; and loving cousins, nieces and nephews and friends throughout the world.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her son, Gino; her parents, James and Hazel (DeWitt) Marshall; her stepfather and uncle, Sam Marshall; her niece, Tara Woodard; her great-nephew, Adam DeWitt; and several beloved aunts and uncles.

A graveside service and committal will be held for Pat and Frank next summer at Billings Creek Cemetery near Ontario. We will honor the life they shared for more than 53 years.

Pat was a faithful witness and servant of Jesus Christ wherever she lived, teaching Bible lessons to women in her home while in Saudi Arabia. She found great joy and comfort in the words of the Scriptures and in the words of the hymns of her faith, singing them throughout her life and even through her final years.

“Well done, good and faithful servant … Enter into the joy of your Master.” — Matthew 25:21

Beverly “Bev” Gnewikow

Beverly “Bev” Gnewikow, 83, of Ontario passed away peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014, at her home near Ontario.

Bev was born Feb. 15, 1931, to Corwin and Garnet (Brey) Budde in rural Ontario. She married Clayton Robert “Bert” Gnewikow on June 11, 1949, in Dell, Wis. She farmed with Bert, along with working at Tillman Produce in Wilton, candling eggs. She later worked at MECA Sportswear for many years, and then at the Ontario Elementary School as a teacher’s aide, a job she really loved. She was a longtime member of the Royal Neighbors of America and the 131 Homemakers Club. She also was a member of the Ontario American Legion Auxiliary.

Bev’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was so proud of each and every one of them and loved them unconditionally. She was so interested and involved in their lives, from the babies to the adults. She loved being with her family and rarely missed an event or activity with them. She was the most caring and loving mom, grandma, great-grandma and friend. She made you feel like you were the most important person in the world, and in her eyes, you were. The world was blessed the day she was born. Now Heaven is blessed. Bev always had a smile and a kind word. She loved her friends and enjoyed doing things with them. She became friends with everyone she met. Bev loved to travel, especially by plane. Although she didn’t drive, she was on the go almost every day, thanks to family and friends. We would joke that she’s never home — but she really was. She’d respond with, “Well, I’m going to go when I get the chance; there might be a time I can’t.”

Bev was a wonderful cook and baker. She was known for her almost-world-famous potato salad and made it for her family and for other events. We loved her homemade noodles, bread, donuts and pie, and we can’t forget her cookie sheet cake. We were looking forward to her Christmas goodies of honey cookies, date pinwheels, icebox cookies, frosted Christmas cookies and divinity. She would have to make sure family and friends got some.

Bev loved music and loved to dance. She and Bert were excellent dancers. She terribly missed the old days of dancing together. (I’m sure that the first thing she did when she got to heaven is grab Bert and say, “Let’s dance,” and everyone will be watching them!)

Bev is survived by her five children, Diana (Dan) Giese of Norwalk, Debby (Gene) Cary of Viroqua, Dixie (Allen Cook) Mason of Florida, Dave (Bonni) Gnewikow of Ontario, and Doug (Tina) Gnewikow of Ontario; her grandchildren, Troy (Lora) Muller, Ryan (Jaime) Muller, Kelly (fiancé Jarrett Luethe) Giese, Brock (Morgan Murphey) Giese, Cade (Dionne) Cary, Cole (Maren) Cary, Cori (Jason) Fortney, Jorden (fiancé Link Buckles) Tosca, Hayden Gnewikow, Khrysa (Derek) Nofsinger, Dalton Gnewikow, and Alexis, Mackenzie and Clayton Gnewikow; her great-grandchildren, Jake, Stephanie, Carly, Claudia, Sydney, Sienna, Ashton, Baby Kennedi (expected soon), Braxton, Brogan, Brecken, Cannen, Boden, Regan, Corwin, Eric, Madisyn, Jadyn, Masyn, Case, and Brantley; a sister, Nancy Plucinski of Tomah; a sister-in-law, Marge Gnewikow of Sauk City, Wis.; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, an uncle and friends, who were all special to her.

Bev was preceded in death by her husband, Bert, in 1990; her parents, Corwin and Garnet Budde; her in-laws, Ortwin (Short) and Grace Gnewikow; and her brothers-in-law, John Plucinski and Ortwin Gnewikow Jr.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, at Mount Pisgah Wesleyan Church in rural Ontario. Pastor Bob Streeter will officiate. Burial will be held at a later date in Hilltop Rest Cemetery. Family and friends are invited for visitation from 12–3 p.m. Sunday at the church. Honorary pallbearers will be Troy Muller, Cade Cary, Ryan Muller, Cole Cary, Hayden Gnewikow, Brock Giese, Dalton Gnewikow and Clayton Gnewikow. The Torkelson Funeral Home of Ontario is assisting the family with arrangements.
